It was great to meet with and mentor the startup founders of the recent StartupBootcamp FinTech cohort in Dubai. Impressed by the financial solutions they are working on to alleviate many pain points in emerging and established markets. Some will have face a tough battle ahead to disrupt incumbents and others will have to show people the value their superior technology can offer. It’s only the beginning of their journey and I look forward to seeing how they progress in the coming months and years.

While back in Los Angeles earlier this month, I visited the La Kretz Innovation Campus which also hosts the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI). This is a great initiative by LADWP and the city of Los Angeles to promote cleantech through education to the public as well as support for startups and entrepreneurs working on new cleantech solutions. The space has all the perks you expect from an incubator from Co-working spaces to Welding Studios & Cell Labs and Electrical Engineering spaces. The campus also has in-house support teams to assist newbies and veteran makers alike in prototyping their hardware concepts.

Last month, I took part in roundtable discussions with various participants from government and private sector entities hosted by the Dubai Future Council on Entrepreneurship and Innovation Ecosystem.

The objective of the roundtable sessions was to discuss the key challenges facing the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the UAE; by gathering a multitude of stakeholders that are engrained in the ecosystem, the aim was to gather inputs and inform the Dubai Future Council members on the key strategic issues and help cultivate the appropriate legislations and policies.

There were some great discussions and it was a truly novel way of involving the community and stakeholders to gather first hand feedback. We discussed core themes such as business licensing,

@daanroosegaarde visited the European Space Agency & Dubai Future to discuss the great humanitarian problem of space waste which could lead to the Kessler Syndrome if we don’t act on this looming issue and would harm our space faring exploration ambitions as a humanity.

It was a privilege to be on the panel of judges for the final round of the @stepconference pitch competition.
The three finalists pitched some great ideas and took interesting approaches to their respective market problems.

We evaluated based on their scalability, creativity, value proposition & ability to compete in the market. Overall great ideas but only one could be named the winner.

Over the past few weeks I have been checking out v

Over the past few weeks I have been checking out various organic polyculture farms which allow for genetic diversity which in turn enhances the resilience of crops. Such polyculture cropping allows farms to remove synthetic chemicals via natural processes; in the past monoculture was considered more scalable than polyculture but with modern technology and techniques polyculture is catching up and increasing the immunity of the crop fields without the need of chemicals.
Some of the types of farm cropping methods I checked out were: Row Cropping and Temporal Intercropping techniques.
Look forward to checking out Agrivoltaic, Hydroponic and Aquaponic farms in the near future.

Throwback to a great time mentoring and judging participants of Harvard Crossroads Emerging Leaders Program organized by Harvard Business School. 71 students were selected out of 1700+ applicants from 23 different countries to attend the week long leadership program.
Thanks to Dubai Future Accelerators for organizing a hackathon for the CELP participants and having a group of Cohort 5 participants mentor them. It was a pleasure to meet with various talented students from all around the world.
